RUSAL Awards Grants to Develop Sports Programs in Mykolaiv
On April 22, RUSAL, the world's largest aluminum and alumina producer, announced the four winners of its "100 Sports Projects" program in Mykolaiv. The grants will help regional organizations develop and implement sports programs for children in play areas near public buildings. The organizers received 29 proposals and awarded grants worth 30,000 UAH each. The winning proposals include developing traditional competitive sports such as football and basketball and providing sports activities for children with disabilities. The projects will be implemented from May until September 2008. Please click here for additional information (in Russian).

Snite Furniture Company Helps Children with Heart Defects
On April 9, Snite furniture company in Kyiv initiated a program to unite the business community and ordinary people to help children with heart problems. The initiative includes a public awareness campaign through its showrooms and efforts to encourage other businesses to get involved. The "Save a Child's Heart" program, with support from the Child Heart Charitable Foundation, will save children's lives by providing high-quality medical services. Each year, over 5 thousand children with heart defects are born in Ukraine, many of whom die during their first year of life. In 2007 Snite sponsored counseling programs for ill children and their families before and after operations to help them emotionally adapt. Please click here for more information (in Russian). |

Olympus and U.N. Announce Environmental Photography Competition
The United Nations in Ukraine and Olympus, a leading camera company, announced a national photography contest for the public, "Addressing Climate Change - Caring for our Planet." In partnership with the Ministry of Environment of Ukraine and with support from Olympus, this photography contest will raise awareness of the importance of addressing climate change challenges and promoting responsible attitudes towards the environment among decision-makers and the general public.
